Rita Harrington
Born in Maine and living in Michigan most of her adult life, Rita is a self taught artist. She is currently a member of the Plein Air Painters of Northern Michigan and a Guild Member of Crooked Tree Art Center in Traverse City.
While working primarily in watercolor she also enjoys acrylic and pastel mediums. Her lifelong passion to paint and try photography presented itself on a trip to Monhegan Island, Maine some years ago with her sister-in-law, a professional photographer and artist. Linda Stevenson helped her conquer her fear of being judged for her lack of formal training. It was a time to go within and allow her creativity to emerge.
Rita has exhibited in Michigan, Maine and Maryland juried shows regularly and has won awards for her watercolors. Artists she admires are Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer, and Photographer Ansel Adams.
Rita’s paintings are influenced by her creative photos which reflect her focus on isolated details, in part due to her Forensic Photography training and a career in Nursing. For her, both artistic efforts keep her in the moment, removed from past events and concerns for the future. Most of all painting and photography are relaxing, meditative and liberating.
